A Beachy Combination for AYSI 378

This week at As You See It, we have a theme challenge for you: Summer Days. There are so many wonderful things to choose from when thinking about summer but for my family, it's the beach.

There are several good beaches less than half an hour from home but for a holiday, we like to go north where it's just a tad warmer. We often end up at Ohope. We've gone there with various of our adult children and our granddaughter for the last three summers, so there's a few scrapbooking opportunities awaiting me in the craft room. This challenge seemed a good chance to tuck one of them away.

It's a nice simple, one-photo layout and I started by laying down some watery background using the Water mask from Water and Dotted Lines, a blending brush and some Hydrangea Hue ink. This was on a piece of 12 x12 White Willow.

Using one of the wave dies from Rolling Waves, I cut two pieces of frothy wave from Blueberry Bushel to lay down a strong horizontal. I drew on Blueberry Bushel and Hydrangea Hue as best matches to the blues in the sky.

After that, it was simply a matter of adding some beach themed bits: the starfish and shells are from Rolling Waves while the jandals and sunglasses are from Summer Happiness. In my stable of colours, I didn't have a pink that matched little Miss's outfit but the Melon Mambo went well with it. The Coastal Cabana tied in nicely with her Crocs and as for the Daffodil Delight - well, there's the sunshine for you!

To finish off, I made a signpost out of the words from Summer Happiness.

I added a touch of journalling and the date at the bottom of the page, just in case any of us who were there should ever forget the hullaballo that broke out seconds after this photo was taken, when the wind grabbed the Bluey Hat and tossed it into the ocean - never to be seen again!

And of course, Little Miss 3 does not have a Starfish face. That's just my attempt to give her a shade more privacy. 😀

Rolling Waves for The Paper Players 795

After Jaydee's gorgeous colour challenge - and the lovely vibrant entries it brought in - we have a Clean and Simple Beach theme challenge for you this week from our hostess, LeAnne.

So this week is a double challenge. Your project must use a beach theme AND be in Clean-and-Simple style. At the Paper Players, we take this to mean that there should be lots of clean, white space with minimal layers, minimal embellishments and an overall uncluttered look.

I started with a Thick Basic White card base and a Basic White card front. I sponged some Pool Party ink with a blending brush onto the central area of the card to suggest the ocean.

Of course, my go to beach bundle at the moment is Rolling Waves. I cut one of the wave dies out of Basic White and added it as a horizontal axis for the card design.

Using Basic Gray ink, I stamped the sentiment.

A bit of scurry around in my bits box unearthed some diecuts left over from previous projects so I was happy to use a Coastal Cabana palm leaf and some sea shells /starfish in Daffodil Delight, Melon Mambo and Petal Pink.

I played around with the idea of adding some sparkly embellishments but decided that they added nothing but some distraction and left them off. I often think it takes a bit more courage to leave things out than it does to add things in!

Rolling Waves for CAS Colours & Sketches 583

I was taken by Deborah's sketch over at CAS Colour & Sketches this week, so made a bit of time to have a play with it.

I liked the clean look of the sketch and the endless possibilities for the horizontal trio of elements. Since I'm still having an early acquisition romance with the Rolling Waves bundle (Online Exclusive) it seemed natural to go to that.

I've played quite a lot with the sea shell dies and the wave building stamps and dies but had yet to really try out the beach umbrellas. Here's where that ended up....

I stamped the water with Pool Party ink, daubed with some bits of Coastal Cabana. Then I sponged very lightly along the waterline with some Pecan Pie ink to suggest the sand. I stamped the sentiment in Basic Gray, saving the 'Happy Birthday' for the inside of the card.

The bit I enjoyed the most was die-cutting and assembling a trio of sun umbrellas from Flirty Flamingo, Pool Party and Daffodil Delight. There's a trio of rhinestones atop the umbrellas to simulate the end of the support pole and a tiny starfish as embellishment.

In the bottom photo, if you squint your eyes just right, you might be able to detect the 'seafoam' on the wave - a band of Wink of Stella. Clear in real life, less so in the photo! Isn't that always the way?

A Beach Theme for Colour INKspiration 207

Welcome to the 207th challenge at Colour INKspiration! Thanks for all the gorgeous entries for last challenge. We have another pretty combination for you this time around, chosen by Crew Member Cheryll Miller. Soft and pretty.

This challenge runs for nearly two weeks and will finish on Monday 22 April, 5pm AEST.

If you haven't played with us before, we are a group of Stampin' Up Demonstrators from the South Pacific. Challenges are shown and entered via our Facebook Group page. If you don't belong, and would like to, click here. Don't forget to answer the three easy questions you'll be asked when you ask to join the group.

Each challenge, Top Picks and a winner are chosen by the crew and the winner offered a chance to Guest Design with us for a future challenge. We welcome Rochelle Blok as our Guest Designer for this challenge.

If you don't have an exact challenge colour, feel free to replace it with whatever you have that's closest, for example Petal Pink for Bubble Bath. Black, White, Very Vanilla, Crumb Cake, Basic Beige and metallics are free colours, as are flesh-toned Stampin' Blends.

Winter is starting to make himself felt today, so I fancied a little bit of tropical in protest! I wanted to be transported to somewhere warm and beachy. I started by randomly blending some Daffodil Delight, Bubble Bath and Pool Party over a piece of Basic White. I then sponged some Coastal Cabana around the outside edge to kind of fence the colours in.

So the next question was - what next?! Well, a collaboration between two sets is what happened next. Shell Collecting meets Rolling Waves. I stamped some shells from Shell Collecting in Pool Party ink over the card front.

What's the beach without some water? So I splashed a little Wink of Stella over the surface like water splashing on skin.

The sentiment is from Rolling Waves and cut using a die from Textured Notes. Then I die cut some palm fronds and sea shells and arranged them under and over the popped up sentiment.

So there's my little piece of tropicana done and dusted. What will you do with these colours?

Rolling Waves for Atlantic Hearts 674

I was taken by this sketch at Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge and had to play along.

I stamped a panel of Basic White with the watery stamp from Rolling Waves, sponged and stamped in some sand, then added some wave die cuts. Then I cut them into strips of various widths.

I embossed a Basic White card front with the retired Seabed embossing folder before adhering it to a Coastal Cabana card base.

When adhering the strips that made up the beach scene I alternated adding them flat and popped up on dimensionals for interest.

I added a sentiment, stamped in Basic Gray and cut with a label from Textured Notes. The 'Happy Birthday' is on the inside.

On a scrap of Basic White, I sponged some Peach Pie and Pumpkin Pie in an uneven manner, then splattered it lightly with some Pumpkin Pie ink. From this, I die-cut some seashells and starfish and added them to the waterline.

Using the Stash for Around the World on Wednesday

Welcome to the latest hop for Around the World on Wednesday. I hope you're all feeling ready to create!

On the second Wednesday of each month, the team put together a thematic hop to give you some inspiration for your own crafting. We love it when you try out something new or CAS(E) one of our projects. The team is truly international, with members from each time zone of the world that Stampin' Up! operates. You're with me, in New Zealand - the first place in the Stampin' Up! world to change the date. 😀

This month, we're doing something a little different. It's five years since Around the World on Wednesday started up, so we're doing some close-up looks at the team. In this, our final team close-up, we're looking at Kim Gibbons Fee. Kim is a returning Artisan team member (2022, 2024 and 2026). Kim loves to create with whatever she has on hand in her craft room... she is creative with her outside of the box thinking and if she feels a need to use something that is not current, she doesn't hesitate to use it.

So our mission was to CAS(E) a project of Kim's and to do so using our stash.

I found this on Kim's Instagram and it became the starting point of my project. It evolved along the way!

I didn't need a second invitation to get out a favourite retired bundle, Notes of Nature. I stamped two images in Smoky Slate onto a piece of Basic White then had fun doing some ripping. I layered it over a piece of Granny Apple Green that had been embossed with the Exposed Brick embossing folder. (Not retired but it's been around a while and is an absolute staple of my craft room).

I wanted to give the card front some subtle texture so what could be more perfect than the retired (but ever so wonderful) Subtle embossing folder? Don't you just love to #useyourstash?

I used the Notes of Nature dies to create a focal point around the sentiment. They're cut from Basic Black (to tie in with the card base), Granny Apple Green and Azure Afternoon.

The sentiment was cut using Stylish Shapes - the most used item in my craft room. They've been around for a few years, and when they eventually retire, I'll still be using them. 😀

For embellishments, a used a trio of rhinestones coloured with the dark Azure Afternoon Stampin' Blend.

So, there are quite a few differences between my card and Kim's but I think you'll agree that the parentage is clear!

Rolling Waves for Colour INKspiration 204

Welcome to the 204th challenge at Colour INKspiration! Thanks for all the gorgeous entries for our first challenge of the year. We have another pretty combination for you this time around, chosen by crew member Lou Kitzelman.

This challenge runs for nearly two weeks and will finish on Monday 9 March, 5pm AEST.

Each challenge, Top Picks and a winner are chosen by the crew and the winner offered a chance to Guest Design with us for a future challenge. We welcome Mariel Altamirano as our Guest Designer for this challenge.

If you don't have an exact challenge colour, feel free to replace it with whatever you have that's closest, for example Melon Mambo for Flirty Flamingo. Black, White, Very Vanilla, Crumb Cake, Basic Beige and metallics are free colours, as are flesh-toned Stampin' Blends.

Although I was tempted to go floral for these colours, instead I wanted to play with my new bundle, Rolling Waves. I thought they could pass as beach colours too.

I started by stamping a wall of water in a mix of Soft Sea Foam and Lost Lagoon. I added a lacy die cut at the top to suggest a foamy wave and a different lacy die cut to suggest the water running in to the sand. The sand was stamped in Crumb Cake. Once the scene was set, I cut out a flag using one of the Party Banner dies.

Then I cut another set of the lacy die cuts to create horizontals across the card front. Then I popped the flagged beach scene over the top of them.

I used the dies to cut some seashells in Petal Pink and Flirty Flamingo. Then I added some to the beach to complete the scene.

I added a sentiment to the top of the banner, then stamped a 'Happy Birthday' on the inside.

The finishing touch was a trio of Pearlised Faceted gems.

Rolling Waves for Around the World on Wednesday

Welcome to the second hop of the year for Around the World on Wednesday. I hope you're all feeling rested, re-energised and ready to create!

This month, we're doing something a little different. It's five years since Around the World on Wednesday started up, so we're doing some close-up looks at the team. Our mission was to both CAS(E) something from the catalogue and to CAS(E) something from team member (and ex-Artisan) Teri West using one of her reimaginings of a Paper Pumpkin kit.

Going through the new January-April Mini Catalogue, I found this little card which I love the layout of. So often in my cards, I use a texture-embossed card front with the rest of the design taking up about 1/3 of the space. I was quite surprised to discover that, in the end, my CAS(E) of this did not include a texture embossed front!

For the second part of the challenge, I used a card of Teri's (see it here) that had a similar-ish layout but used colours that I liked: Melon Mambo, Pool Party, Bumblebee (replaced by Daffodil Delight) and Petal Pink.

Sitting on my desk was a new bundle, part of my pre-order for the March Online Exclusive drop, called Rolling Waves.

Instead of the strip of cardstock in the catalogue, I used a stamp to create a width of sand. Then I used one of the wave dies to create a waveline to run across the sand. I think the stamp is really meant to create water for a wave but I liked it as sand.

Then I used some of the other dies in the set to create an overhead view of a beach brolly and some seashells and starfish. I do love a beach-themed set!

Just as the words are so cleverly placed partly over the disco ball in the original, I've placed my sentiment (also from Rolling Waves) partly over the umbrella.
