Retro Rubber 111 - Design Team Card

This week, at Retro Rubber Challenge, we're having a Tic-Tac-Toe. Choose a row, column or diagonal and use it to make your card. Of course, with this being Retro Rubber, you need to use at least one stamp that's more than a year old and tell us the approximate age of it.

Now that Stampin' Up's retiring list is out, you'll know that Lovely as a Tree is finally retiring this year after being in the catalogue since 2001! So this card is a farewell to that long-serving and truly lovely set. The sentiment is from a newer set - just about to have its first birthday - Rooted in Nature.

I've played the top row: neutrals, ribbon or twine, sponging. 

I've not only sponged the hills for the trees but have used a sponge to distress the edges of the main panel and the Crumb Cake mat behind. This helped the plain Crumb Cake sentiment stand out more clearly. To add to the slightly distressed look, I've coloured the shiny silver leaf trinket with a Soft Suede Stampin' Blend - voila - instant antiquing!

Retro Rubber 108 - Design Team Card

This week, at Retro Rubber Challenge, Jane has given us a rainbow theme. It's easy. Either use at least four rainbow colours or include a rainbow in your card. Of course, given that this is Retro Rubber Challenge, you must still use at least one stamp that's at least a year old and tell us the approximate age of it.  Really, this challenge is just an excuse to get out some of your old things and show them some ink. 😀

I've always loved playing around with watercoloured and inky backgrounds and it occurred to me that if I turned a rainbow into a horizontal, I'd have a range of colours that loosely equated to a sunset sky, grass and water. It was a short jump from there to Lovely as a Tree. Lovely as a Tree has been around the Stampin' Up world since 2006 and it is still current!

I stamped the image on first with Stazon because I wanted to be sure where to put the grass, sky and lake with my inks. If position is less important, I usually do the watercolouring and then add the image in with Tuxedo Black once it's dry.

I used Shimmery White cardstock since I was using water and ink. I splattered the scene with water just because that's one of my favourite background techniques - I love the random effect of the splatters. I added in some splats of clear Wink of Stella for the same reason.

I used the new Stitched Rectangle framelits to finish the shape nicely before matting it onto som Bermuda Bay cardstock. To the Basic Black cardbase, I added a Basic Black cardfront that had been embossed with the Pinewood Planks embossing folder. To pick out the grain more clearly, I skimmed White Craft pigment ink over the top.

The sentiment is from a retired set that was one of the first sets I got from SU,  A Dozen Thoughts which is from 2013-14 Annual Catalogue.

The Paper Players 372 - Design Team Card

Last week, I had so many favourites in The Paper Players gallery that it was hard to choose only one. Fortunately, the rest of the team picked quite a few of my others, so I was happy! This week, the amazing Joanne - aka The Crafty Owl - has a sketch for you. I couldn't wait to get started on it and I hope you'll be just as keen to play.

I've opted for a 90 degree turn, so the orientation is portrait rather than landscape.

The Delicate Ornaments framelit has been used to frame a starry forest scene. One tree is gold embossed and the stars have been embossed in silver to echo the colours in the Cheers to the Year DSP.  There are two ornaments, one in plain Island Indigo tucked in behind to create a shadow effect.

The Paper Players 369 - Design Team Card

Jaydee's fabulous tic tac toe challenge at The Paper Players gave us some real beauties in the gallery. I know I had about five favourites and it was hard to just pick one! So, I'm looking forward to seeing what you all do with LeAnne's lovely theme challenge this week.

I've had my eye on a set called Lovely as A Tree for some time. It's been in every annual catalogue I've ever seen from Stampin' Up. I read somewhere that it's the set that holds the record for being available for the longest time. So I've havered but recently I used some Stampin' Rewards and added it to my order.  I'm so pleased I did. It's an all-season set but the lone pine makes a great Christmas tree.

The Eclipse technique has been all over the internet in recent weeks and this challenge seemed like a good chance to try it out. You can use any die for this technique but I also recently added the Large Letter framelits to my collection and wanted to try them out too. They were something else I'd wanted for a long time but the expense of them put me off. I was lucky enough to earn them almost for free, using my Demonstrator flex points - another good reason for joining up with Stampin' Up.

The trees are a mix of gold embossing and Garden Green. I like the effect of adding in a part emboss of the Softly Falling folder to give the illusion of snow, too.
