Positive Thoughts for Around the World on Wednesday February

Welcome back to another monthly inspiration blog hop from the team at Around the World on Wednesday. We hop on the second Wednesday of each month with a theme that we hope will give you some inspiration. This month's theme is The Basic Essentials. We were free to interpret this however we liked.

I've been thinking a lot about what it's like, when you're at the beginning of your stamping journey, and you're not sure what you need to have versus what you want to have. The choices can be overwhelming and then most often, the budget constrains you anyway!

With this in mind, I've done a couple of videos in a 'Starting Stamping' series, aimed to help people sort out the got-to have things: the Basic Essentials. The first one deals with the most basic equipment - things you just have to have such as a paper trimmer, acrylic blocks, adhesives and a minimum of stamp, ink and paper. The second video is about where to start with colours, where I recommend starting with Memento Black and a single colour family. The third is in the works and will deal with items that will give you more technical scope without breaking the bank such as blending brushes, rhinestones and Wink of Stella.

So in my interpretation of The Basic Essentials, I've limited to myself to the things I've recommended to starting stampers.

I've used a single colour family - Regals - and Tuxedo Black.

I've used no equipment more complex or expensive than paper snips and blending brushes.

I've used the most basic go-to embellishments: Wink of Stella and Basic Rhinestones.

Yet I'm more than happy with the outcome.

Positive Thoughts for Retro Rubber

This week at Retro Rubber, it's time for one of Claire's fabulous sketch challenges. As always, the rules are simple. Just make sure to use at least one stamp that's a year or more old and tell us the approximate age of it.

The set I've chosen is Positive Thoughts, from the 2020 Occasions Mini Catalogue. The colour palette is neutral: Gray Granite, Mossy Meadow and Merry Merlot.

I stamped the maidenhair fern image in Gray Granite on the background circle, then stamped another in Mossy Meadow, die cut it and added it to the circle. The butterfly was stamped in Merry Merlot then quickly painted with a layer of Wink of Stella to both spread the ink and add some sparkle.

Having chosen the linear pattern from the Neutrals paper stack, I then had a dilemma with the Bricks & Mortar 3D embossing folder: which way to emboss? In the end, I went with the bricks on the vertical simple because I liked the way it continued the vertical lines of the DSP.

Positive Thoughts for AYSI 249

We've got a wonderful colour challenge for you this week - such a delicious looking combination!

I knew that I wanted to make a card that was delicate with a lot of open space but beyond that, wasn't quite sure. I stood in front of my stamp shelves and hoped for inspiration. Out popped a set I've not used in a while, Positive Thoughts.

I totally love the maidenhair fern stamp. It's just so satisfying to stamp with and so pretty! I started by repeat stamping it in Mint Macaron, then lightly sponged over it with So Saffron and a blending brush. If you haven't tried using a blending brush yet, I'm sure you'll also find that to be a relaxing and satisfying experience.

The butterfly was stamped in Soft Suede and coloured using Flirty Flamingo Stampin' Blends. I did cut it out using the corresponding die from Nature's Thoughts but as I didn't want the border around the edges, I fussy cut them off. I layered on the tiny die-cut butterfly, cut from So Saffron.

I thought it was looking a little plain at this point, so I used the wonky-stitched edge rectangle die from Nature's Thoughts to cut out the centre of the card front, then placed it back in again. This had the effect of framing both the butterfly and the sentiment. You could try this with any decorative edged rectangle die.

Positive Thoughts for As You See It 221 - DT Card

It's 'Fill in the Blank' week this week at As You See It Challenge.

This one had me stumped for quite a while. I didn't really know the answer, since the answer is always going to be, "One I've made." But I got thinking a bit more and came up with birthdays. I got along a bit further and realised I enjoyed making cards with flying things: dragonflies, butterflies, birds. They all feature quite a lot. So I'm going to fill in the blank like this: My favourite type of card to send is birthdays and butterflies.

So I got out Positive Thoughts because I love the fern and butterfly images.

The big butterfly is layered, sitting on a Blackberry Bliss 'shadow' and with a small, lacy butterfly on top.
