Geared Up Garage for PP488

After a recent discussion with a friend about bits boxes and white paper off-cut boxes, today I decided to do something about them. I don't know about you, but so often a good clean out is a form of procrastination. In this case, I was hoping that if I cleaned up my desk I'd find my mojo hiding there somewhere and be able to get on with some creating.

I'm not entirely sure I found it, but I did find in my bits box something of interest. Some time ago, I did a class using Geared Up Garage and I taught my people how to make faux metal out of paper. There in the bottom of the box was the piece I made as demonstration, along with another thing we did in that class: using small stamps to create a tone-on-tone DSP.

Since my mojo was still on a go-slow, this week's sketch from The Paper Players came to my rescue with some inspiration.

So, here it is - the bits box bonanza:

The faux metal gears were made on Crushed Curry to get the golden underglow, then built up with layers of different browns and partial layers of clear embossing. A fun technique!

The strangest thing is that the stamped panel and the embossed card front are both Sahara Sand, even though they look different. The inner panel has been stamped, the edges sponged and then mounted on a narrow border of embossed copper foil. The card base has been embossed using the Subtle folder. Somehow, these two treatments make them seem as though they are different colours. After looking at the photo, I even had to go back and check the original card with my colour swatch!

So the results of this afternoon's activities were: this card, a much reduced bits box, a much smaller (and tidier) white off-cut box and a MUCH fuller paper recycling bin. 😀

The Paper Players 451

This week at The Paper Players, the challenge is twofold. There's both a theme and a style: masculine and CAS.

Clean and simple is a style I enjoy, despite having been more clean and layered of late, so it was good to get back to a CAS themed challenge.

If you put me in a craft room or a kitchen, I know what I'm doing. If you put me in front of a DIY task or some car maintenance, then I'm about as much use as a wet paper bag. Consequently, I'm often helped out of such situation by others - usually men - so it's good to have some masculine 'thank you' cards on hand.

There's lots of clean, white space here and minimal layers or embellishments. I've kept the colours  masculine: Night of Navy, Smoky Slate, silver and black.

The cluster is stamped, using the oil stain stamp from Geared Up Garage. The cogs are die cut in silver from the co-ordinating set then given a tarnished look by being swiped over with Stazon. The tool box is popped up on dimensionals after the ink has been spread a little with a blender pen.

 

And done! The perfect thank you for all those little DIY and mechanical jobs.

SIP 199 Let's Hear it for the Boys

I've always struggled with masculine cards and the challenge at Stamp, Ink, Paper gave me reason to have another go as does the challenge at The Male Room.

The Geared Up Garage suite certainly makes life easier on the masculine card front. I'm also having a bit of a love affair at the moment with waterfall cards, so I thought I'd see if they worked out in a masculine setting.

Up close, you can see the way using StazOn black has distressed the cogs in a very pleasing way.
I like that the sentiment is general enough to lead into either a birthday or Father's Day.

After this, I do think that a waterfall card can work just as well for the boys!

As You See It 195 - Design Team Card

This week at As You See It Challenge, we have a sketch for you.

I still can't believe how much I've enjoyed the Geared Up Garage suite. It's offered so many possibilities and here's another one. The DSP is fabulous and taps into some rich colours. I've pulled out the Real Red to use as a the front base. To give it some texture, I've run it through the Subtle dynamic textured embossing folder and stamped in some distressed nuts to represent the sequins in the sketch.

For the smaller rectangle in the sketch, I've used a die cut of cogs in black. To give it some texture, I've added some black heat embossing. Before heating the powder, I scumbled it up so that the embossing would be a combination of shiny, patchy and a bit lumpy - kind of like pitted metal.

The sentiment is embossed in black and the cog that represents the star of the sketch has an under-layer of silver foil patchily embossed in black.
