Almost Harry Potter for The Paper Players 758

Goodness me, there were some fabulous entries in Stef's sketch challenge last week! Thank you, to everyone who entered. This week at The Paper Players, our hostess is Claire. She has an interesting theme challenge for us: Halloween Costumes.

I'll admit that this one caused me quite a bit of difficulty given that we don't celebrate Halloween in New Zealand. Of course, I know what it is but I never buy Halloween inspired sets.

I put my thinking cap on and thought about what my children would have loved to dress up in when they were young. Harry Potter was a favourite of every member of the family - and still is. In fact, while tattoos are ubiquitous in New Zealand, there's only one to be seen in our whole family and that is Harry Potter related! They dressed up in Harry Potter style for many fancy dress events and birthday parties so....

I had to ask my daughter for a loan of the Harry Potter-esque stamps I once bought her from Kindred. That caused a bit of flurry, since they had to be located: were they at her house or mine? And if so, where?

But, we found them (at hers and not in the box labelled 'stamps') and I set to work.

I kept things simple, stamping a faux Ron, Harry and Hermione in Tuxedo Black and colouring them in Gryffindor colours with Stampin' Blends. I added a sentiment and some wand power, then cut it out using a frame from Textured Notes.

I hunted through my retired embossing folders to find the one with stars (the name of which I've forgotten) because stars seemed the right background. I matted the Hogwarts trio with a piece of Crushed Curry, added in some retired Crushed Curry Glossy Dots and things were pretty much done.

What's your favourite Halloween costume? You can see what the rest of the team have done and link up your entry on The Paper Players page.

Here's a quick recap of our challenge rules:

  2. Such a lovely Harry Potter card, Jan! I had never heard of Harry Potter until I went home from college for Thanksgiving one year and my parents wanted to go see the first HP movie, and after I watched it I had to buy all the books that were available at the time and read them immediately. One of these days I'll talk my 8-year-old into either reading or watching the first one. I love your magical birthday card too--I know a couple of people who have Halloween birthdays!

  5. This trio are instantly recognisable Jan - I think dressing as Harry Potter and/or friends has to be one of the most popular costume choices of all time so what a great card! Ben has a wand from the Harry Potter Studio tour that to this day he won't part with and I've read and re-read those books (and watched the movies) many times - modern day classics, for sure!

  7. As a huge Harry Potter fan, I LOVE your card Jan! It was a brilliant choice and I'm so glad your daughter was able to find the stamps. My oldest grandson was five when the first book came out and we read it together, cover to cover. When his siblings got a bit older, when they'd come stay for the weekend, we'd binge watch all the movies that were available. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I'm definitely an enthusiastic fan of your card too!

  8. Jan, I loved that you finally found them in a box not marked stamps! :-). Ah, HP. I introduced my step-daughter to HP when the HP and the SS first came out. I remember we stood in line at our local bookstore before midnight for a couple of hours before the release of the CoS. Many moons later, when she was in her early 20s, we did a tour of northern England and Scotland and visited many of the HP film sites. We also rode the Hogwarts Express to the west coast of Scotland. Thank you for taking me down memory lane with your fabulous HP card!

    1. It was a trip down memory lane for me too - all my children grew up on having the books read aloud, then reading them for themselves and eagerly awaiting the release of each movie. Such great stories. :-)
